Sunnah Acts For Eid- 12 Sunnahs To Follow On Eid Day & Night

Sunnahs to follow on Eid. Eid is a day for happiness and contentment after spending the whole month of Ramadan fasting. Just the word “Eid” passes a smile to the face of any Muslim, during the last days of Ramadan. Everyone is excited and joyful waiting for the day, preparing their clothes, planning feasts and whatnot. However, putting on beautiful clothes and just celebrating are not the only things we should do on Eid day.

What To Do On Eid?

There are a few basic sunnah’s that you need to follow on both Eid-ul-Fitr & Eid-ul-Adha:

  • Make ghusl for Eid Salah and try praying in a mosque.
  • Put on Attar (a perfume or a nice scent).
  • Eid something sweet while stepping out for Eid prayers (preferably dates).

Along with rulings, there are some sunnah’s that should be followed by Muslims on the joyous and religious occasion of Eid. Some of these sunnah’s are listed below.

↓ 12 – Making Dua On Eid Night:

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “There are five nights where du’a would not be rejected; the fifteenth night of Sha’ban, the first night of Rajab, Thursday night, the night before Eid al’Adha and the night of Eid al’fitr.” Dua should be made at the sight of the moon. ↓ 11 – Reciting Eid Takbeer

As soon as we are sure that the next day is going to be Eid, we should start reciting the Takbeer of Eid. Eid ul’Fitr and Eid ul’Adha have different Takbeers. These should be said accordingly. From the moment the moon is spotted, these takbeer’s should be narrated till the morning of Eid when Imam comes out for the Eid prayer. The takbir for Eid ul’fitr is: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La Ilaha Illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahi Alhamd. (Allah is the most great, none has the right to be worshiped but Allah. Allah is the greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise.)”

  ↓ 10 – Congratulating And Greeting People

On Eid day, people offer congratulations to each other in forms of “Eid Mubarak” or “Happy Eid” and other greetings like these. However, a better way to meet is by the dua that was used by Sahaaba many years ago. It was narrated by Jubayr ibn Nufayr (ra), that the Sahabah (ra) used to greet each other on the day of Eid with: ‘Taqabbal Allaahu Minnaa Wa Minka’, which means ‘May Allah accept (the fast and worship) from us and from you’. ↓ 9 – Make Ghussal Before Eid Salah

Purity is an essential part of our religion as Muslims. To make ghussal before Eid Salah is a sunnah that all Muslims should follow. Ibn ’Abbas narrated, ‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) used to have a bath on the day of Fitr’. [Ibn Majah] We are encouraged to do the same and, in doing so, we make sure that gatherings and family festivities are an enjoyable affair.

↓ 8 – Putting On Attar

The Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) liked putting on attar on special occasions like Eid. Men are also encouraged and appreciated to put on attar after ghusal. This presents a good aura in the mosque.

↓ 7 – Dress-up In New & Clean Clothes

Eid is a joyous and happy occasion that people like to celebrate with others. Men and women should dress nicely and modestly. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged dressing up for Eid, looking beautiful and smelling good. It is considered customary and well-known among people of all time.

↓ 6 – Eat Before Going To The Mosque

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) always ate before going for the Eid Salah. For Eid-ul-Fitr, it is sunnah to have some dates, preferably in odd numbers, before going to offer the Eid prayer. This was done so as to not extend the fast any longer.

↓ 5 – Eat An Odd number of dates

The Holy Prophet (SAW) always ate an odd number of dates before going for the Salah. Narrated Anas bin Malik: Allah’s Messenger (SAW) never proceeded (for the prayer) on the Day of `Id-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates. ↓ 4 – Perform The Eid Prayer

Eid Salah is a very important part of the Eid festivities. Men, women and children; all are encouraged to go to the mosque to perform this prayer. Even the women who are menstruating are asked to go and listen to the prayer and khutbah. Narrated/Authority of Al-Bara: “I heard the Prophet (p.b.u.h) delivering a Khutba saying, “The first thing to be done on this day (first day of Eid ul Adha) is to pray; and after returning from the prayer we slaughter our sacrifices (in the name of Allah) and whoever does so, he acted according to our Sunna (traditions).” In another narration by Abdullah bin Umar, it is said: “Allah’s Apostle used to offer the prayer of Eid-ul-Adha and Eid-ul-Fitr and then deliver the Khutbah after the prayer.” (Bukhari)

↓ 3 – Sunnah For Eid-Ul-Adha

Performing the ritual of Qurbani is a mandatory requirement worthy of many blessings. Before slaughtering, a dua should be made. This prayer brings blessings and grace in the good deed. This du’a is from Al-Bayhaqi: “With the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest! (O Allah, from You and to You.) O Allah, accept it from me.” Making this du’a is basically asking Allah to accept our deed and to bestow blessings in it.

↓ 2 – Zakat al’fitr

Zakat al’fitr is a charity that is given to for poor in the last few days of Ramadan. It is a part of the fast of Ramadan. It must be performed before Eid Salah, unless there is some valid reason for delay. Whether male or female, adult or minor; it should be given on behalf of every family member. It involves almost 5.5 pounds of wheat, rice or similar food items.

↓ 1 – Taking Care Of The Poor

The poor should not be forgotten on special occasions like Eid. On Eid ul’fitr, they should be remembered while giving out money as Eidi, while on Eid al-Adha it is important to distribute the slaughtered meat with them. The Prophet (SAW) always shared his happiness and gifts with the poor and took care of them. It is our responsibility to acknowledge these people and to help them as they are truly the ones in need.
